All About Cement Tiles: Applications, Advantages, Disadvantages, and Tips

by Jorik van der Heide on Sep 19, 2022

If you are considering new tiles for your home, cement tiles are a great option with many benefits. Cement tiles are durable and long-lasting, easy to clean and maintain, and they are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. For example, there are Portuguese cement tiles, Spanish cement tiles, and cement tiles from other countries, all with their own style patterns.

Cement tiles for outdoor and indoor use

Cement tiles can be installed on both floors and walls, indoors or outdoors. If you are looking for a tile that can be used both indoors and outdoors, cement tiles are a good option. Cement tiles are durable and long-lasting, making them perfect for high-traffic areas. They are also easy to clean and maintain.

Cement tiles for kitchens

Cement tiles can be used as floor tiles or wall tiles. They are available in various colors and patterns, so you can find the perfect tile to match your style. Cement tiles are a versatile and stylish option for any home. Cement tiles also pair very well with a modern or sleek kitchen. You will always find a motif that suits the kitchen.

When you are looking for hard-wearing and durable floor tiles for the kitchen, cement tiles are a good option. The kitchen is a place where a floor takes a lot of punishment. Cement tiles are a perfect and durable option for kitchen floors. They are incredibly hard and almost indestructible.

Due to their hardness, cement tiles are quite scratch-resistant and wear-resistant. In addition, the tiles are relatively easy to clean with soap and a mop. To prevent grease stains and food residue stains, we recommend impregnating the cement tiles. This is often very simple and costs only a few tens of euros.

You can also place cement tiles on the backsplash of your kitchen. In this area, many grease stains will appear on the tiles. To protect the tiles, you must also impregnate them carefully here. Don't want to bother with this? Then choose Moroccan Zellige tiles or Ceramic tiles. These cannot absorb dirt or moisture.

Cement tiles for bathrooms or toilets

We often get asked whether cement tiles can be installed in a bathroom. It is becoming increasingly popular to design bathrooms in a Mediterranean style. This ambiance evokes a holiday feeling and helps you relax.

As mentioned earlier, cement tiles must be impregnated when laid on floors. This certainly applies to a bathroom floor. You will need to treat the bathroom floor regularly if you want it to stay beautiful. Water, lime, shampoo, and shower gel can damage your tiles if not properly cared for.

There are Spanish cement tiles, Moroccan cement tiles, and Portuguese cement tiles available. The latter is best suited for bathrooms. Always ask the seller about the quality of the tiles and how best to treat them.

Cement tiles in the hallway or living room

When buying tiles for indoors, people often only think of bathroom tiles, toilet tiles, or kitchen tiles. However, you can also use tiles very effectively in the hallway. For example, consider a cement tile floor in the hallway with a Portuguese pattern. This creates a warm welcome for your guests with a real eye-catcher.

You can also use cement tiles as wainscoting in the hallway. Cement tiles are available with the most beautiful patterns and are perfect for styling a hallway.

Do you want to make a statement with beautiful designer tiles in your living room? Cement tiles are perfect for this too. Patterned tiles are ideal for decorating a wall or a floor.

Sustainable cement tiles suitable for hospitality

Cement tiles are environmentally friendly and made from natural materials. Cement tiles are produced in a relatively sustainable way because no kilns are involved. But above all, they are so durable because of their long lifespan. Especially in restaurants, bars or other hospitality establishments, floors are used intensively. Cement tiles are a perfect flooring option.

Make sure to impregnate them properly, and they will be indestructible. They are also available with the most beautiful patterns, such as this retro pattern in a trendy tapas bar in Madrid. Furthermore, they are easy to clean.

Buying cement tiles due to high gas prices

Cement tiles are made from pressed concrete. The tiles do not need to be fired in kilns. Kilns used to fire tiles are fueled by gas. In these times of war and energy shortages, gas is unaffordable. Cement tiles are the perfect alternative to ceramic tiles for this reason.

How are cement tiles made?

In this blog post, we have mentioned several times that cement tiles are very durable. This is due to the high quality of the tiles, but also to how they are made. No kiln is used in the production process. Would you like to know more about this? Then read about the difference between ceramic tiles and cement tiles. Or read our blog post about Portuguese cement tiles for more information about these beautiful handmade patterned tiles.

Buying old cement tiles

Because cement tiles last so long, many old cement tiles are also available. Cement tiles truly come to life after much use. The patterns begin to fade very slightly, and the colors take on beautiful shades.

Therefore, you can buy cement tiles second-hand very well. When buying old cement tiles, you just need to pay close attention to the quality of the tiles. Try to find out where they come from, how they have been treated, and if there are any breaks.

Especially in interiors with a vintage or industrial living style, old cement tiles look beautiful.
